Youth (New Generations) Committee Youth (New Generations) Committee

Projects completed by the Youth Committee over the last twelve months include:

·          WHEELCHAIRS FOR KIDS ($500)

Gordon Hudson from the ‘Wheelchairs for kids’ project attended the club. Following his presentation it was decided to provide $500. This money will provide five wheelchairs for third world country children who have disabilities caused by birth defects, disease and land mines.

·          NATIONAL YOUTH SUMMER FORUM

Aarti Malhotra (female) 15 yrs was nominated by our club for the National Youth Summer Forum. Unfortunately she failed to gain selection.

·          THE OZTRY FOUNDATION ($2300)

This foundation is a partnership between Rotary, Local Schools and The Oztry Foundation. The Oztry Foundation conducts a program called “Why Try” which is run by trained teachers and targets at risk youth in high schools. The program promotes character building life skills and attitude training to youth to achieve self-respect, freedom of choice and set a focus on the opportunities available in life. Our Club provided funding for two Thornlie High School teachers to attend a training course in March 2006. Funding also provided for 50 sets of student resources. This will be the first time the program has been run in Western Australia and is still to be evaluated. The two teachers selected were Donna Price and Cherie McMillan.

·          HANDICAMP ($1400)

Two nominations were financed by Thornlie RC. Our club also provided an up front donation of $500 which helps finance the preliminary costs of establishing the camp.

As has occurred in previous years President Christine Ralph again volunteered as the Camp Nurse.

·          ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP CAMP (RYLA)

Although our club supports RYLA it was unable to find any candidates for this camp. It seems difficult now to find willing candidates for these week long leadership camps.

·          ROTARY CITIZENSHIP AWARDS ($300)

The committee supported our annual award of a donation of $50 book prizes to six local primary schools. The criterion is based on Rotary’s ‘Four Way Test’. Schools generally refer to the award as the Rotary Citizenship Award.

·          THORNLIE TENNIS CLUB ($141)

Nelly Maarssen from the Thornlie Tennis Club requested funding for the purchase of six tennis racquets for underprivileged junior players who could not afford to buy a tennis racquet. Our club purchased six racquets at a cost of $141.

·          ROTARY YOUTH PROGRAM OF ENRICHMENT ($600)

The committee once again supported the Rotary Youth Program Of  Enrichment (RYPEN). Four students from Thornlie Rotary Club were selected. The students were Beth Caniglia, Rebecca Berloth, Hayleigh Brakespeare and Candice Dunning.

·          SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL TOUR TO JAPAN ($1000)

Christine Pitman from the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School gave a presentation of their plan to provide a Teacher Exchange with the Japanese School of Toyomastu Junior High School. Thirteen teachers would be traveling and then teaching at this school while in Japan. Joint committee funding of $3000 was provided with $1000 to come from Youth, Vocational and International Committees.

Poa provides welfare, employment and educational support for young people who are severely disadvantaged and in urgent need of help. The project is supported by the YMCA of Perth. Funding was promised by the City of Gosnells but the Project was at risk of closing if funding was not forthcoming. $2500 was jointly funding from the Youth and Community Service Committees.

·          CHAMPION WA SCHOOL NETBALL COMPETITION ($200)

An application for funding from Shanyn Morrison, 14 years of age from Thornlie was supported. Shanyn is a champion netball player who was hoping to compete in Queensland.

Brad Puls, the principal from Clontarf Aboriginal College spoke to our club in March, 2005 about the success of the college in attracting and retaining aboriginal students through a combination of football and education. The committee considered the programme was worthy of funding from whatever money might come from our clubs investments in the Perth City Markets.
