Youth Service (New Generations)
Rotary's Fifth Directorship or area of service (not recogised as an Avenue of Service under RI's Constitution) is comprised of all programs that Rotarians may carry out to promote and encourage youth (New Generations) - the importance of a well rounded education, physical health, the cultivation of spiritual and ethical values, and an understanding of world affairs, with an acceptance of peoples and cultures from all countries.
Rotary's Youth programs are:
- Rotaract: A club for young men and women between the ages of 18 and 30 years designed to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.
- Interact: Interact is a club to provide an opportunity for young people between the ages of 14 and 18 at secondary school, designed to guide them to work together in a fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding.
- Youth Exchange: Youth Exchange is an international program of Rotary for students of secondary school age to engage in study and travel aboard for one academic year or less for the purpose of advancing international understanding and goodwill. Students are sponsored by sending and receiving Rotary clubs and districts, and usually staying in host Rotarian's family homes. Information and applications can be gained and made through local Rotary clubs.
- ROTEX: Rotex is an organisation of past Rotary Youth Exchange Students who have been sponsored by Rotary Clubs in Western Australia.
- RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards): RYLA is a week long live-in camp program that assembles for leadership training, young persons currently engaged in some aspect of youth work. The program exposes participants to challenges and to opportunities for development of their leadership skills to enhance their service to the community. The RYLA Seminar offers a youth-to-youth training experience, within the ambit of educational and recreational activities. Camps are held during the January holiday period.
- RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program Of Enrichment): This program is directed towards 14 to 17 year old students. Its principal aim, through weekend seminars, is to develop awareness of their place in society, and their responsibility to it.
- NYSF ( National Youth Science Forum): The NSYF is a two week summer school for Year 11 students who intend to pursue a career in science or technology. it is held at the National University in Canberra in January of each year. Applicants are sponsored by local Rotary Clubs and finalists are selected to participate.
- Sidemen's Science Experience: The SSE is for Year 9 students who are selected to attend a three day school in January at various university campuses around Western Australia. All major universities in Western Australia are involved in the program, which gives students an insight into what they might expect if they choose a career in science or technology.
- Handicamp: This activity is to provide an opportunity to disabled people within the age group of 18 to 24 years, to attend a week long live-in camp patterned on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award concept. The camp comprises approximately 20 handicapped and 20 able-bodied support participants. Camps also take place in January.
