Vocational Excellence Awards
Ms Jenny Schmidt
Bevan Baskerville and Mike Raspa presented a vocational excellence award to Jenny Schmidt at a Royal Aero Club Function on 20 September 2006.
David Currie, CEO of the Royal Aero Club described Jenny as a dynamic instructor that has distinguished herself as an achiever. As a manager of flight training, she oversees the flying program of over 100 students and monitors the performance and progress of junior instructors.
Ms Natalie Tarr
Director Ted Evans presented a Vocational Excellence Award to Natalie Tarr, Deputy Principal of the Intensive English Centre (IEC) which is attached to the Parkwood Primary School at our meeting on 27 February 2007.
Kim Doust, Principal, Parkwood Primary School provided the Citation for Natalie describing her as a compassionate, caring and understanding person which are essential qualities for managing the children at the IEC as they have recently arrived in Australia, with little or no proficiency in the English language. Many of the children have arrived through the Humanitarian Refugee Program and have suffered trauma and deprivation requiring immense compassion, understanding and guidance if they are to overcome the difficulties associated with their past and live successful lives in this country.
PREM Bank Visit
Members and their partners enjoyed a visit to KEMH to see both the Perron Rotary Express Milk (PREM) Bank and the Neonatal Intensive Care unit. Seeing the small premature babies in intensive care and also the workings of PREM Bank presented great justification for the financial commitment by our Club
Thanks to Doug Parker for arranging the visit. Special thanks to Professors Karen Simmer and Peter Hartmann, together with Dr Ben Hartmann, PhD recipients Gemma McLeod and Charles who in recognition of our contribution to this project gave up their valuable time to provide the guided tours.
SWAN TAFE Book Subsidy Scheme
This year a further $500 was contributed to this scheme which helps students experiencing financial hardship to purchase books, stationary and other equipment required for their training.
Since the scheme commenced Thornlie Rotary has contributed a total of $3,574.13 and in that time 44 students have been given financial assistance.
Academic and Community Scholarship
Once again the Committee continued with this very successful program which provides scholarships to four year 10 students to encourage high levels of achievement at school and community involvement by young people progressing to upper-school at Thornlie Senior High School.
The scholarship winners were announced at the final school assembly on 6th December 2006 by Director Ted Evans. These awards for $600 each are by far the most prestigious available to Year 10 students.
The official awards presentation was made at a Partners Night on 27th March 2007. This year the format of the meeting was changed to involve all the members of the Vocational committee introducing each of the awardees and providing a little of their background, achievements to date and their future plans. Thanks to John Stockbridge for helping out.
