HISTORY
The Rotary Club of THORNLIE, like a number of other service clubs desired to have a regular income stream. To this end on the 6th July 1980, the club started a Bring and Buy market based in the car park of the local shopping centre.
The establishment of any business requires the proprietor of that business to either develop either an existing customer base or to establish a new customer base. The desire to create a market is not sufficient as there also has to be a strategy for enticing customers to change their existing patterns and habits. In this particular case the changes were required at 06.00hrs on a Sunday morning.
The strategy developed by the club was to advertise and roster club members on duty every third Sunday to sell their second hand garage and household items. Between rosters the Rotarians would “acquire” additional items form friends and neighbours to sell during their next day on roster
Essentials
- A commitment by all members , particularly for the first 12 months
- It is thought that a minimum of 35 members are required to operate a market in the initial 12 months
- A good relationship with the owner of the venue premises. That includes a dispute settling procedure for such things as
- Grounds cleanliness
- Rubbish disposal
- Use of Toilet facilities
- Insurance coverage
- Competition from /with other traders
- Shared use of joint facilities – Sunday trading in the shopping centre
- The appropriate licence from the Government department that covers markets and trading
- Local shire/council approval
- A business plan to ensure continual operation for the first twelve months
- A marketing and advertising strategy

MARKET RETURN
The return on any intended market is difficult to quantify as there are a considerable range of variables that come into play. However it is felt that a market to be justifiable should be returning at least $50 per man hour of input
