HISTORY OF THE CLUB
The organising meeting of the Provisional Rotary Club of Thornlie was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Gosnells and held at the Thornlie High School on 4 October 1973, under the chairmanship of District Governor's Special Representative Bob Rutherford. This meeting was attended by 31 prospective Rotarians and it moved that the first official meeting of the Provisional Rotary Club of Thornlie be held on 16 October 1973.
The Club was officially chartered on 9 November 1973 and held the Charter Dinner on 8 March 1974. During the past twenty years or so, the Club has won three Bulletin Awards, seven Attendance Trophies, three significant Achievement Awards and has hosted a RYLA seminar and a District Assembly.
Three Charter members, Ron Sloan, Frank Keays and Bill Wrathall were District Governors and four members have been awarded Citizen of the Year Awards in their fields of endeavour - PP Paul Buddee, PDG Dr Ken Collins, PP Phil Hall and PDG Ron Sloan.
PDG Ron Sloan, and the Club were further honoured in 1994 with Ron being awarded the International Service Above Self Award by Rotary International. This award is made by the world President and is restricted to 100 Rotarians throughout the world.
The Club is fortunate to still have three of its original Charter Members still attending - PDG's Frank Keays, Ron Sloan and Bill Wrathall.
